To confirm your residency in Rwanda, it’s necessary to provide a valid visa stamped in your passport as proof of your status. Otherwise you have to pay double price of entry fee as a international visitor.

If you are visiting Akagera National Park for the first time and seeking an immersive experience, I recommend embarking on a half-day game drive. This allows you to explore the park and gain knowledge about its diverse wildlife. Another highly recommended activity is a boat trip during sunset, offering a picturesque and serene setting to enjoy the park’s natural beauty.

For a unique adventure, a night drive is worth considering, as it provides increased opportunities to spot carnivores like lions, leopards, and hyenas. It’s an exhilarating experience to witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. On one occasion, we embarked on a night drive and were fortunate enough to encounter a large group of approximately 20 lions, which was truly awe-inspiring.

By participating in these different activities, you can have a well-rounded experience at Akagera National Park and create lasting memories of encountering remarkable wildlife.

During our visit to Akagera National Park, we stayed at the Mantis Akagera Game Lodge, which handed a awful experience. The lodge offered not only comfortable and well- appointed rooms but also tasteful food that satisfied our taste kids. The natural decor girding the lodge was stirring, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the demesne throughout our stay. Overall, Mantis Akagera Game Lodge handed a pleasurable combination of comfort, cookery, and stunning surroundings, enhancing our overall experience in Akagera National Park. They’ve a bonfire every night, it’s also a good memory to have beer while harkening to the sounds of nature.

With six cozy Meru tents equipped with two camp beds each, the camp can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests. Having had the opportunity to visit once before, we can attest that the journey to Karenge Bush Camp is worth the approximately four-hour drive (80km) from the main gate.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a dedicated and friendly staff who provided excellent service throughout our stay. The camp’s well-maintained rooms ensured a clean and comfortable environment, while the picturesque scenery added to the overall charm. One of the highlights was the unique experience of observing numerous animals from the camp using telescopes, immersing ourselves in the wildlife-rich surroundings.

It’s important to note that the road from the main gate to Karenge Bush Camp can be challenging, even with an SUV. Therefore, it is advisable to choose a suitable vehicle for the journey. However, the unforgettable experiences, delicious food, attentive staff, cleanliness, and breathtaking views make Karenge Bush Camp a destination worth the effort.

5. Self Drive Tip

  • Animals move every day, so sightings may vary.
  • Early morning provides a higher chance of spotting more animals
  • Rhino Zone, including zebra, giraffe, and buffalo, can be found along Road No. 6.
  • Elephants can often be seen near the Shakani Camp site and the lake.
  • Lions can be found in the North (Kilala Plain) and South (Road No. 3) areas.
  • Hippos can be found anywhere near the lakes.
  • Leopards have been spotted along Road No. 9. at the night.
  • Please exercise caution regarding tsetse flies. Their bites can be very painful and cause itching, particularly for children.
